We have to STOP talking about "WALKING AND CYCLING" as if they are the same thing
Waltham Forest Streets for All has been campaigning against cyclists and pedestrians sharing the same space since the Council started introducing their Mini Holland project.
The terrible tragedy this week where a pedestrian was killed by a cyclist demonstrates that it is just as dangerous for pedestrians to share space with cyclists as it is for cyclists to share space with motorists.
Of course most cyclists would not ride an illegal bike and demonstrate such arrogance and lack of remorse as Charlie Alliston did. However this terrible incident does demonstrate why bikes need to be kept separate from pedestrians.
Since Mini Holland was introduced in Waltham Forest members report seeing far more cyclists riding along pavements, even when cycle paths have been created for them. This has to be stopped. We also now have cyclists whizzing about in our parks and open spaces causing alarm and possible injury. If cyclists need routes through our parks these need to be safely physically segregated. In the past cyclists were always asked to dismount in parks.
Matthew Briggs, the widower of the woman that was killed by the cyclist, is campaigning for a change in the law to cover dangerous cycling. https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2017/aug/24/widower-matthew-briggs-of-woman-mown-down-cyclist-calls-change-in-law-kim-briggs-charlie-alliston
Waltham Forest Streets for All is completely behind this campaign.
