Walthamstow institution closing due to Mini-Holland

We are very sad to learn from our Committee Member, Asghar Jilow, that he is going to have to close the Eastman Army Camp shop in Walthamstow High St. This shop is a virtual treasure trove for anyone who likes the outdoors; camping, fishing, hiking etc. It is very difficult to find any shops these days where you can actually go in and browse this kind of item. Asghar has been in the High St for 20 years and will be sorely missed.

Asghar has been campaigning vigorously against the Mini Holland road closures and all the Council's parking restrictions, but all his protests have been ignored. Asghar has collected nearly 200 signatures from surrounding shopowners who are also suffering from LBWF's actions. However despite all the hours of campaigning he has put in, on his own, and recently as a valued committee member of Waltham Forest Streets for All, the Council refuse to address the problems.

Allowing businesses to suffer like this, and reducing footfall in the High St, creates a much more unsafe environment. The lower end of the High St already suffers from fewer shoppers and empty streets after dark. This has led to ongoing problems with drug sellers, alcohol and petty crime. The best remedy for these problems is busy streets with lots of people. The more shops that are boarded up the better environment for criminal activity.
